Making of the Movie and Outcome

After coming up and roughly storyboarding our idea we immediately started to make it. Our goal was to create a set and puppets which we can move to make a movie as our overall outcome. We started off by getting a shoe box to be our stage. One of us drew on a piece of cardboard the various poses pf the characters, whilst the rest of us painted the stage and created the tree in the background. To colour it we decided to use acrylic paint and marker, which I think was the right decision as the colours are bright and pop, plus they dried very quickly, which helped due to the time we had.

One thing in our group which we struggled to decide on was whether to have each scene have a different set and we ultimately decided against it and just having one set, which I do believe was the right decision, because we did not have enough time to construct three sets and we did not have enough cardboard, so we most likely would have wasted too much time finding enough. Although, I think we should have tried to give the impression of a different set between each scene (particularly the last scene), for example taking the tree in the background out and replacing it with a bench, putting a pavement in for the last scene, or changing the texture of the floor (e.g. placing cut up green thread on the ground).

For the characters, we drew them on cardboard and cut them out. Then we used markers to colour them in, giving each character their own signature colour, which I think works well as it helps differentiate the characters in the movie, however I do think it would have been nice to try adding a bit of detail to each character, for example an item of clothing. Although, we did decide to use embroidery thread for the hair and in my opinion, it works really well as it makes the characters more interesting by giving them more texture.

Finally, we created the movie, and we used wire to move the puppets, plus we slit whole in the top of the set so we could properly move the characters. I am very happy with the overall outcome of the movie; I think it is funny and fits the song well. Also, something I really like are the colours we selected, as they pop so much on the film.

Design - Theatre, Screen and Performance
